Our take
By Victor Gil Vazquez · Reviewed 2026-08-21
The strongest all-round deposit terms in this catalog: 4.10% on savings, no fee on either account, and the only branch network of the three online-first banks here.
No fees, and nothing to qualify for
Capital One 360 Checking and 360 Performance Savings both charge no monthly fee — not waived on a condition, but no fee. Set against the rest of this catalog, that's the meaningful difference: Chase, Wells Fargo, Citi, U.S. Bank, PNC, Truist and TD all charge something on checking or savings and then publish a list of ways out. Capital One publishes no list because there's nothing to escape.
That removes the failure mode most people actually hit. Every waiver in this catalog is a monthly test, and the month you fail it is usually the month money was tight — which is exactly when a $15 charge does the most damage. An account with no fee has no bad month.
The rate is the best here, and it's the headline rate
360 Performance Savings pays 4.10% APY, the highest verified savings rate in this catalog. On a $10,000 balance that's roughly four hundred dollars a year, against about one dollar at Wells Fargo or Truist. Over the life of a typical emergency fund that difference is larger than any other single decision on this site.
Two things about it are worth checking rather than assuming. It's the rate everyone gets, not a promotional tier or a relationship rate — which is not true of most branch-bank savings offers. And like every variable savings rate in this catalog, it can be repriced at any time without notice, so the number to compare next year is next year's number.
360 Checking also pays 0.10% APY. That's small in absolute terms, but it's a hundred times Wells Fargo's savings rate, on a checking account.
252 branches — fewer than you'd want, more than you'd expect
Capital One runs 252 branches on about $513 billion in deposits. That's far short of a branch bank: nothing like Chase's 5,392 or even TD's 1,051, and in most of the country there won't be one near you.
But it's not five, either. Among the online-first banks in this catalog, Capital One is the only one with any physical presence at all, and the seven cards we track make it a full-service relationship rather than a single savings product. If you want online-bank pricing without an online-bank-only lineup, this is the closest thing here.
App ratings are 4.9 on the App Store and 4.5 on Google Play. As with PNC, the Android side lags noticeably, which is worth a look if that's your platform.
What stands out
- 4.10% APY on 360 Performance Savings — the highest verified savings rate in this catalog, available to everyone rather than by tier.
- No monthly fee on either checking or savings, with no conditions to keep track of.
- 360 Checking pays 0.10% APY, which is more than most banks here pay on savings.
- 252 branches plus seven credit cards: the only online-first bank in this catalog you could use as your only bank.
What to watch
- 252 branches is thin coverage. Outside a handful of metros, treat it as an online bank.
- The savings APY is variable and can be cut at any time — the rate is the whole proposition, so watch it.
- 4.5 on Google Play against 4.9 on the App Store, a wide gap between platforms.
- No dedicated student deposit account, though two of the seven cards are student versions.
- Best for
- Almost anyone whose main requirement is that the account be free and the savings rate be real — particularly a first emergency fund.
- Look elsewhere if
- You deposit cash often or need a branch nearby for anything more than convenience.
