Our take
By Victor Gil Vazquez · Reviewed 2026-08-21
A $95 travel card with a genuinely differentiated structure: 5x on hotels and 4x on airlines booked anywhere, not through a portal.
No portal requirement is the distinguishing feature
The premium travel cards in this catalog mostly put their headline multiples behind an issuer booking channel: Chase Sapphire Reserve's 8x, Citi Strata Premier's 10x, Capital One's 5x. Autograph Journey's 5x on hotels and 4x on airlines carry no such condition.
That's worth more than the raw multiple suggests. Booking direct usually means better cancellation terms, easier changes, and loyalty credit with the hotel or airline — all things a portal booking tends to weaken. A slightly lower multiple you can earn while booking the way you'd book anyway is often worth more than a higher one that changes your behavior.
3x on restaurants and other travel fills in around it, and 1x on everything else.
Earning back the $95
At 5x hotels and 4x airlines against a 1x baseline, the fee is covered by roughly $2,400 a year in hotel spending, or about $3,200 in flights. For anyone taking three or four paid trips a year that threshold arrives without effort; for one holiday a year it doesn't.
The APR is Wells Fargo's three-tier structure: 19.49%, 25.49% or 28.49%. The 19.49% floor is a point above the no-fee Autograph's, which is the standard premium-card pattern.
The highest rates here that do not require an issuer's portal
5x on hotels and 4x on airlines, earned booking direct. Every other elevated travel rate at the top of this catalog runs through the issuer's own booking channel — Citi Strata Premier's 10x and Capital One Venture X's 10x through their portals, Chase Sapphire Reserve's 8x through Chase Travel, Capital One Venture's 5x through Capital One Travel.
That distinction is worth more than it first appears. A portal multiple is earned on the portal's price, with the portal's cancellation terms and the portal's inventory. Booking direct keeps the loyalty status, the flexible changes and the hotel's own rate — and here it still earns 5x.
3x on restaurants keeps it alive between trips
Under the travel rates sits 3x on dining and on other travel, so the card is not dormant in the months you do not fly. That is the weakness of pure travel cards at this fee level: they earn well four times a year and 1x the rest of the time.
The APR runs as three published tiers — 19.49%, 25.49% or 28.49% — rather than a range, which is Wells Fargo's convention across its lineup and tells you more than a spread does. As with every card carrying a fee, none of it works if a balance survives the month.

- 19.49% APR floor, higher than the free Autograph's 18.49%.
- No verified welcome bonus in our data.
