Our take
By Victor Gil Vazquez · Reviewed 2026-08-21
Flat 1.5% on everything with no cap and a 15-cycle 0% period. The simplest of the four student cards here, and the one hardest to use wrong.
Simplicity is the feature
Unlimited 1.5% cash back on every purchase, no cap, no categories, no activation, no quarterly ceiling to watch. Set against its sibling — the student Customized Cash card with its 6% self-selected category and $2,500 combined quarterly cap — this earns less at the top and requires nothing of you.
For a first card that trade is usually correct. The value of a starter card comes from building a payment history, not from optimizing a rewards rate on a small spend, and a card with no decisions attached is a card you're less likely to mismanage. The difference between 1.5% and 6% on a student's monthly spending is a few dollars; the difference between paying on time and not is a credit score.
The intro period, used properly
0% intro APR for 15 billing cycles on purchases, and on balance transfers made in the first 60 days. On a student card that's genuinely useful as a shock absorber — a laptop that dies in week three of a semester, a flight home — spread over more than a year without interest.
After the 15 cycles the rate is 17.49% to 27.49% variable. The single most valuable habit to build in those first 15 cycles is clearing the statement in full, because it's the habit that determines whether the go-to APR is a number you ever have to think about.
The clearest rate of the four student cards here
1.5% on everything, no cap, no category to choose and nothing to activate. Its adult counterpart advertises 2% for the first year and then drops to this same 1.5% — so the student version is, oddly, the more honest of the two: what it says on day one is what it pays in year five.
For a first card that clarity is worth more than a higher headline. The habit being built is paying the balance in full every month, and a card with nothing to manage makes that habit easier to keep.
The rate that actually matters is the one you should never pay
17.49% to 27.49%, the same range as Bank of America's adult cards. On $500 carried for a year the top of that range costs about $137 — more than 1.5% would return on $9,000 of spending, which is a year of ordinary student purchases.
That is the arithmetic worth internalising early, because it does not change with a better card later: no cash-back rate available anywhere in this catalog outruns interest on a balance. The rewards are a rebate on money you were spending anyway, never a reason to spend it.

What stands out
- Unlimited 1.5% with no cap and nothing to activate or select.
- 0% intro APR for 15 billing cycles on purchases, and balance transfers in the first 60 days.
- No annual fee, and a 17.49% APR floor at the lower end of the catalog.
- The same structure as an adult card, so it doesn't need replacing after graduation.
What to watch
- 1.5% is below the flat 2% cards in this catalog, though those aren't student cards.
- APR reaches 27.49% after the intro period ends.
- No cash welcome bonus in our data, unlike the two Capital One student cards here.
- Student status conditions apply and aren't verified in our data.
- Best for
- A first-time cardholder who wants one rate, no rules, and a card that grows up with them.
- Look elsewhere if
- You'd actually use a 6% category — the student Customized Cash card pays four times as much on it.
